Custom furniture only works when the process is clear. Here we outline the steps we follow at Blackline Studio so you know what to expect and when—from first conversation to final installation.
Step 1: Brief and site context
We start by understanding what you need: type of piece (console, TV unit, dining table, etc.), location, dimensions, storage or display requirements, and style direction. We also note site conditions—wall lengths, ceiling height, existing finishes—so the design fits the room.
Step 2: Design and layout
We produce layout and elevation drawings with dimensions, material zones, and finish notes. You review and approve or request changes. We freeze the design only after you sign off so fabrication matches your expectation.
- Layout: plan view and key dimensions.
- Elevations: front and side views with heights and depths.
- Material and finish: wood, metal, laminate, glass, etc., specified clearly.
Step 3: Material selection and ordering
Once the design is frozen we finalise materials: sheet goods, metal sections, hardware, and finishes. We order from trusted suppliers and schedule delivery so fabrication can start on time. For metal pieces we confirm grade and finish (e.g. powder coat colour).
Step 4: Fabrication
Fabrication happens in our workshop: cutting, joining, welding (for metal), assembly, and surface finishing. We work to the approved drawings and do in-process checks so dimensions and finish quality stay on track. For large or multi-part pieces we may do a trial fit before final finish.
Step 5: Finishing and quality check
After fabrication we apply the final finish—paint, laminate, veneer, or powder coat—and do a quality check. We look for alignment, joint quality, and finish defects. Only then is the piece marked ready for dispatch or installation.
Step 6: Delivery and installation
We deliver to site and install: placement, fixing (if required), and basic levelling. We leave the area clean and walk you through care and warranty. Any snags are noted and addressed as per our process.
Custom furniture succeeds when each step—brief, design, material, fabrication, and installation—is done with clarity and one point of responsibility.
